COMPENSATION & POSITION DETAILS

RESPONSIBILITIES

Cross Country (Fall Season):

• Plan, organize, and lead all cross country practices, meets, and team activities
• Develop individualized training plans focused on endurance, form, and race strategy
• Prepare athletes for VHSL regional and state competition
• Manage course logistics, transportation coordination, and meet-day operations

Track & Field (Spring Season):

• Plan, organize, and lead all track & field practices, invitationals, and championship meets
• Instruct and develop athletes across multiple events including sprints, distance, hurdles, relays, and field events
• Identify athlete strengths and place student-athletes in appropriate events to maximize team success
• Prepare athletes for VHSL regional and state competition

Year-Round Duties:

• Monitor student-athlete academic eligibility and encourage academic achievement
• Communicate proactively with student-athletes, parents, and school administration
• Ensure full compliance with all VHSL rules, regulations, and Bland County athletic policies
• Maintain accurate records of rosters, results, and equipment inventory
• Foster a program culture built on teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and personal growth
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred
• Previous coaching or competitive experience in cross country and/or track & field preferred
• Knowledge of distance training principles, track & field event techniques, and meet management
• Strong leadership, communication, and motivational skills
• Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents, and school staff
• Must pass required background check per Bland County Public Schools policy
