Position Title: Custodian-Second Shift Employment Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment for students, employees, and visitors. The employee performs routine cleaning, minor maintenance, facility preparation, and other duties necessary for the efficient operation of the assigned school or division facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleans and sanitizes classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, gymnasiums, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and vacuums floors and carpets.
- Cleans and disinfects sinks, toilets, water fountains, fixtures, and high-touch surfaces.
- Empties trash and recycling containers and disposes of waste properly.
- Dusts and cleans furniture, windows, walls, doors, equipment, and other surfaces.
- Restocks paper products, soap, and other restroom and custodial supplies.
- Cleans spills, bodily fluids, and other potentially hazardous materials according to established safety procedures.
- Maintains custodial closets, equipment, tools, and supplies in a clean, organized, and secure manner.
- Reports unsafe conditions, needed repairs, vandalism, property damage, and security concerns promptly.
- Performs minor maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, and making simple repairs when authorized.
- Assists with snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, steps, and other designated areas.
- Assists with groundskeeping and outdoor cleanup as assigned.
- Sets up and removes tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials for school activities, meetings, athletic events, and special programs.
- Opens, closes, and secures buildings as assigned, including checking doors, windows, lights, and alarm systems.
- Assists with receiving, moving, and storing supplies, furniture, and equipment.
- Monitors heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems and reports problems to the appropriate supervisor.
- Follows all division policies and procedures regarding safety, chemical use, storage, sanitation, and personal protective equipment.
- Uses cleaning chemicals and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and required safety standards.
- Responds to emergency cleaning, weather-related, or facility needs when directed.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding students, employees, and school operations.
- Interacts professionally and respectfully with students, employees, parents, and visitors.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous custodial, housekeeping, maintenance, or related experience preferred.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use custodial tools, chemicals, and equipment safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of basic cleaning, sanitation, and workplace safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
- Ability to organize work, manage time, and complete assigned duties within established schedules.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality are required.
- Must be able to pass all background checks and other employment requirements established by Bland County Public Schools and applicable law.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier objects with assistance.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and waste containers.
- Climb ladders and work at moderate heights when necessary.
- Operate powered and non-powered custodial equipment.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Work around dust, cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, noise, odors, and other conditions commonly present in school facilities.
- Use required personal protective equipment.
Work Environment
The Custodian works in school buildings, offices, athletic facilities, grounds, and other division properties. The position may require evening, weekend, holiday, or emergency work depending on operational needs and assigned activities.
