Reports To: Supervisor of Operations/Transportation Coordinator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Primary Purpose
To provide safe and efficient transportation for students to and from school, field trips, and other school-related activities in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and School Board policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate a school bus safely along designated routes and schedules
- Ensure the safety, welfare, and orderly conduct of student passengers
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus and report mechanical concerns promptly
- Maintain discipline on the bus in accordance with School Board policies
- Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and division transportation procedures
- Maintain accurate records, including mileage, fuel usage, and student counts
- Report accidents, incidents, or behavioral concerns to appropriate personnel
- Keep the assigned bus clean and in proper working condition
- Attend required training sessions, meetings, and professional development
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and supervisors
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with School Bus and Passenger Endorsements required
- Ability to meet all physical and medical requirements for school bus drivers in Virginia
- Clean driving record with no major violations
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening
- Demonstrated ability to work with children and maintain appropriate discipline
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and attention to safety
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of safe driving practices and traffic laws
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to manage student behavior effectively and calmly
- Skill in operating a school bus under varying road and weather conditions
- Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle
- Ability to climb bus steps and assist students as needed
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
- Adequate vision, hearing, and reaction time to operate a bus safely
Terms of Employment
- 10-month position (school year)
- Salary and benefits established by the Bland County School Board
- Eligible for benefits including participation in the Virginia Retirement System and health insurance (for full-time employees)
