Position Summary

The Elementary VALSS Tutor provides supplemental, high-impact tutoring to students identified as needing additional academic support in reading and/or mathematics through the Virginia ALL In Tutoring (VALSS) initiative. Tutors work with students individually or in small groups using evidence-based instructional strategies to accelerate learning and improve academic achievement.

The tutor collaborates with classroom teachers and school administrators to support student growth while maintaining a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide tutoring to elementary students in reading and/or mathematics.
Deliver instruction using division-approved curriculum and evidence-based instructional practices.
Work with individual students and small groups during the school day and/or after school as assigned.
Assist students in strengthening foundational academic skills.
Monitor student progress and maintain accurate tutoring records.
Communicate regularly with classroom teachers regarding student progress and instructional needs.
Encourage student engagement, confidence, and academic success.
Participate in required training and professional development related to the VALSS program.
Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and School Board policies.
Follow all division policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Qualifications

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED required.
Experience working with elementary-age students preferred.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of elementary reading and mathematics instruction.
Ability to establish positive relationships with students.
Effective classroom management and instructional support skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Basic computer skills, including Google Workspace and educational technology.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school day.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
Ability to supervise students in a classroom setting.
